Abstract

Objective To investigate the white matter volume changes in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) by using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method. Methods A total of 22 patients with TLE (11 the left TLEs & 11 the right TLEs) and 15 gender, age and education-matched normal volunteers were enrolled in this study. Whole brain 3D structural images were acquired using magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequences were performed in all patients. 3DT1WI images were analyzed base on VBM methods and calculate of the brain white matter data expressing by voxel. Results Compared with healthy controls, the left TLE patients demonstrated significantly decreased regional cerebral in left para-hippocampal gyrus, right middles temporal gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, left thalamus, right insular, left inferior parietal lobule and left superior parietal lobule. The right TLE patients demonstrated significantly decreased regional cerebral in right inferior temporal gyrus, left lingual gyrus, left middle occipital gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, left precentral gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, right precuneus, right postcentral gyrus and left inferior parietal lobule. Conclusion There are multiple brain white matter volumes reduction in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, the VBM can reveal the volumes changes of white matter.
