Abstract

Objective To investigate the technique and clinical value of chest CT in the quantitative determination of pleural effusion. Methods 260 patients with pleural effusion were examined by conventional thoracic cavity CT scanning. The images of patients with pleural effusion were imported into PhilipsEBW4.05 workstation. Tissue Segmentation function was used to fill the pleural effusion in Volume mode until all the effusion was completely filled. Tissue Management window was further processed, pleural effusion was showed with different colors, and finally the volume was calculated. Results Using the Tissue Segmentation function, we could accurately calculate the amount of pleural effusion with a variety of causes of pleural effusion (not limited to encapsulated fluid). Conclusion Accurate measurement of pleural effusion with CT could make the clinical doctor to better determine the treatment plan and prognosis assessment, to avoid or reduce the occurrence of medical malpractice. It could also solve the clinical work of the trouble, andreduce the pain and economic loss for patients.
